Nested random e!ects estimation in unbalanced panel data
نویسنده
چکیده
Panel data in many econometric applications exhibit a nested (hierarchical) structure. For example, data on "rms may be grouped by industry, or data on air pollution may be grouped by observation station within a city, city within a country, and by country. In these cases, one can control for unobserved group and sub-group e!ects using a nested-error component model. A double-nested unbalanced panel is examined and a corresponding maximum likelihood estimator is derived. A generalization to even higher-order nesting is feasible. A practical example and a Monte-Carlo simulation compare the new estimator against the non-nested ML estimator. The style of presentation is intended to aid applied econometricians in implementing the new ML estimator. ( 2001 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved. JEL classixcation: C13; C23

For a random e ects regression model with unbalanced panel data, we demonstrate that the Generalized Least Squares (GLS) estimator can be expressed as a (matrix) weighted average of estimators which utilize the within individual and the between individual variation in the data set. We thus generalize a relationship familiar for balanced panel data. Speci c attention must be given to the interce...
متن کاملRegression Systems with Random Coefficients: Estimation Procedures for the Unbalanced Panel Data Case
A framework for analyzing panel data characterized by a system of regression equations with random heterogeneity in intercepts and coefficients and unbalanced panel data is considered. A Maximum Likelihood (ML) procedure for joint estimation of all parameters is described. Since its implementation in numerical calculations is complicated, simplified procedures are presented. The simplifications...

متن کاملTest of Random vs Fixed E¤ects with Small Within Variation
Comparisons of within and between estimators using the conventional Hausman test may be subject to statistical problems if the within variation is not su¢ ciently large. Adopting an alternative asymptotic approximation, we propose a modi cation of Hausman test that is valid whether the within variation is small or large. 1 Introduction With the advent of many panel data sets, researchers are co...
